Welcome
As you would be aware there has been a lot in the press recently on the substantial volatility in the share markets. As we all know volatility within the investment markets is part and parcel of investing and after several years of good returns we expected this volatility to occur sooner or later.
During these times it is important to note that even though your portfolio value will be affected from the volatility that is currently occuring, this will be a short term event. With all investments, it is always important to take a long term view and hold on while the markets go through these movements.
Missing The Best 30 Days
Interestingly enough research shows that if you had missed the best 30 days from the ASX200 over the last 10 years, your portfolio would be approximately 56% lower in value at the end of the 10 year period.
Time in the Market
'Timing the market' is where you try to buy when the market is low and sell when it is high. However, anticipating the top and bottom of the market can be extremely difficult. In practice, many who try to time the market end up worse off.
'Time in the market' refers to the length of time your investment stays in the market. Adopting a longer-term approach to the market often results in less volatility in the performance.
